Lior Gadidi
Nearly a decade ago, I boarded a flight to the other side of the world to spend two months volunteering in the Namuwongo slum in Kampala.

Live and work alongside our team in the heart of Namuwongo, Kampala: teach in the kindergarten and school, run projects with our youth and women’s groups, and start initiatives of your own. Volunteers become part of the community here, and the difference you make is felt every day.
There is no program fee: you cover your own personal expenses, and breakfast and lunch are on us.
Read what it’s really like from two people who did it, Shiraz’s journey diary and Little Angels.
Our projects are varied and there is always room for creativity. We like to bring the best out of our people, volunteers included.
Manage the international sales of our products, including the beautiful, eco-friendly handicrafts made by our Umoja women's group.
Lead a group of motivated and talented youths from the slum.
Manage Little Light's social media pages on various platforms.
Change children's lives by giving extra help to low-achieving students.
Improve the physical form of our compound, to make it as efficient, inspiring, safe and fun as possible.
Impart technology skills to children who come from a place where electricity is a luxury.
Conduct house visits in the slum, to help overcome some of the day-to-day challenges our beneficiaries face.
Manage the organization's data and IT systems.
Lead change in the community through the execution of ambitious educational work plans.

I arrived in Uganda in 2019 to volunteer with Little Light, in Namuwongo, one of the hardest places I’ve ever seen.

Little Light has brought many incredible people into my life, many of whom, over the years, have become like family.
No, there is no program fee. You cover your own personal expenses, such as flights, and breakfast and lunch can be eaten at the kindergarten together with our staff and children at no extra cost.
Our compound in Namuwongo runs as a kindergarten and school in the mornings, and becomes a community center for our Umoja women's group and youth group in the afternoons. Past volunteers have worked across all three, from classroom support to community projects, and there is room for your own initiatives: an entrepreneurial spirit is welcome.
Namuwongo is a slum community in Kampala, Uganda. Little Light was founded in Namuwongo in July 2007.
Fill in the contact form and choose “volunteering” as what you're interested in. You will receive a response from our team within a few days. Go to the contact form
Volunteers need to be at least 20 years old. Beyond that, we look for people who can commit to at least two months and bring their own initiative to the children, the women's group or the youth group.
We ask volunteers to commit to at least two months, so you have time to settle in and the children and groups get continuity. Tell us what you have in mind through the contact form. Ask about stay length
We give every volunteer our safety guidelines, with clear do's and don'ts, and there is a security guard at the compound. Before you travel: a visa is required to enter Uganda, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required as well, other vaccinations are recommended, and travel and health insurance is highly recommended. Write to us and we'll walk you through what to expect. Ask about safety
Education is one of Little Light's top values.
Thanks to the scholarship program, our youth have the opportunity to complete their A level education, sponsored by international donors. Part of our youth group are currently studying and some have already graduated successfully!
Become a sponsor and help transform a young life!
