Little Light Children Center
Little Light Children Center
A community center in Namuwongo, Kampala, since July 2007.

our story
Little Light Children Center was founded in July 2007 as a self-help community center in Namuwongo Zone B, one of the largest and poorest slums in Kampala, Uganda. It grew organically from the local community, built by local and international volunteers who saw children left to wander unsupervised, with almost no access to health services or education. Children and youth make up over seventy percent of Namuwongo's population.
We provide free education in nursery and early primary classes for children from the neighborhood's most deprived families, together with nutritious meals, health services and extracurricular activities in a safe, nurturing environment. We support our students from early nursery through to adulthood, with scholarships and the material and educational support they need to succeed, and we engage with their families too, including social services and employment opportunities.
Because we operate from within the Namuwongo community, by members of the community, we are best placed to meet its needs. Alongside our school and scholarship programs, we run the Youth Group, which helps young people navigate the pressures of life in the slum, and Umoja, our women's group, which builds economic and social independence for the women of Namuwongo.
our mission
We provide opportunities for education, health, and economic growth, through the development of the neighborhood’s youth to positions of leadership and mentoring.
- Education is the foundation for social development and change.
- Everyone has the right to advancement and development.
- Social change can develop organically from within the community through local leadership.
- Volunteer work constitutes a personal example and inspiration to society.
