our projects
Little Light’s work in Namuwongo slum, Kampala centers on two long-running community projects, alongside the Center’s core services for children.
The “Umoja” women’s empowerment group helps women from Namuwongo achieve economic independence and social prosperity by giving them the right tools to build a better life for themselves and their families. Members create Mama Pendo, meaning “The Mother of Love” in Kiswahili, handmade bead jewelry sold to build financial independence, while Little Light supports their children’s education with scholarships. Visit the Women’s Group page for the full story of Umoja and Mama Pendo.
“Spoon Youth” is the official name of the youth group, giving young people from the slum a stable, nurturing environment and the skills to deal with challenges such as drug addiction, violence and crime. Members pursue formal education alongside vocational and artistic training, including dance, music, art and a soccer team, building skills for life. Visit the Youth Group page to meet Spoon Youth.
Alongside these two groups, Little Light Children Center gives children and their families access to education, health services and a safe environment in Namuwongo, from free schooling for the youngest children to scholarships that carry students through Uganda’s school system.
